The Northumberland Coast
Just a short drive away you will find the beautiful untouched beaches of the Northumberland Coast, this area is so exquisite it is officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we definitely recommend heading to the beach for a walk, a picnic or just to relax on a sunny day! There are many picturesque villages along the coast with great places to eat, drink and explore. Why not head up to Bamburgh Castle and take a look around? The Potted Lobster in Bamburgh is great if you want to wine and dine after a day of site seeing. Seahouses is a beautiful coastal village and fishing port- we recommend grabbing some delicious fish and chips and heading to the beach. If you fancy some water sports head to Beadnell and try your hand at Kayaking and Coasteering.
Nearby Dining
When staying with us, you are within walking distance of Carnaby’s which is perfect for breakfast, salads, sandwiches or even just coffee and a cake! If you fancy a pub lunch or a couple of drinks, just a 7 minute drive away, in Ellingham, is the Pack Horse Inn another great option for dining out.
Chillingham Castle
Chillingham Wild Cattle and Castle are just over the hill from us (heading west) were you can easily spend a day touring the Castle, Gardens and a tour of the Cattle in glorious surroundings.
The Cheviots
The Cheviots are a range of rolling hills along the border between Northumberland and Scotland, whether you’re a pro hiker or looking for a simple stroll and picnic in the beautiful countryside, there is a route which will suit you. The Cheviots have some of the most scenic views in Northumberland.
Alnwick
Our boats and cottages are located just a short drive from Alnwick. We recommend heading to Alnwick Gardens, the gardens are beautiful all year round but if you’re visiting us at the end of April/ beginning of May you should be able to see the amazing Cherry Blossoms in full bloom, head to the Treehouse at Alnwick Gardens for a unique dining experience or take a picnic to enjoy on the grass. While you are there, take a stroll around the cobbled streets of Alnwick and don’t forget to head to Barter Books a much-loved secondhand bookstore (it’s one of the largest in Britain), inside you will find three 40-foot murals, open fires and comfy spaces to relax – you could spend hours here! Any Harry Potter fans out there, Alnwick Castle is also a must see, you may recognise a few filming locations from The Philosopher’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets.
Stargazing
You are also perfectly located to experience the infamous Dark Skies; Northumberland National Park is the largest Dark Sky Park in UK and second largest in Europe thanks to our low levels of light pollution. Stargazing may sound daunting to beginners, but you don’t need to be an expert or have fancy equipment to enjoy the view.
Bird watching
If you’re a fan of birdwatching we recommend heading over to Holy Island (remember to plan your trip and check the tide times in advance for safe crossing to and from the island!) or The Farne Islands, they are a paradise for all things wildlife. The Farne Islands have one of the largest bird sanctuaries in the British Isles with large colonies of Atlantic and Grey Seals, take a boat trip from Seahouses and make sure to take your camera!
The Borders
We are located not far from the Scottish Borders which offers lots more hill walking, cycling, historic towns and villages with abbeys, castles and shopping to enjoy.
Edinburgh
Edinburgh is just an hour away on the train from Alnmouth station, enjoy an open top bus tour around the old town, fabulous museums including the National Museum of Scotland plus all the the festivals throughout the summer months.
